Renée Turner & Tara Page: A Conversation on the Pedagogies of Place
What does a place teach us, and what are we learning? Whether a classroom, garden, gym, library, or dinner table, place both forms and informs. Rather than a passive backdrop, all places enable particular ways of being and learning while rendering other forms of knowing impossible. Far from trivial, place situates, tunes, and teaches. Equally important is the multitude of geographies, memories and visceralities each carries within us–some of which escape words but are sensed, embodied, and made. Conversing about their own practices, backgrounds, and the materials of others, they will explore the entangled threads of pedagogy, and place and how we make place and how it makes us.
Tara Page is a researcher, artist and pedagogue who explores the entanglements of practice with pedagogy specifically the making and learning of place and belonging underpinned by new materialist theories, including the ways in which practice with theory can enable social and educational change. Tara is currently the Academic Director for International Development and Academic Partnership and Head of PhD Art Practice and Learning at Goldsmiths University of London.
Renée Turner is an artist and writer whose research engages with digital narratives, archives, and interdisciplinary and collaborative inquiry. Her practice is informed by feminist perspectives, material encounters, and embodied learning. She is a Senior Research Lecturer at the Willem de Kooning Academy, a fellow at V2 Lab for the Unstable Media, a researcher at the Rotterdam Arts and Sciences Lab, and a doctoral candidate within dhfm.
